On this day in 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot and seriously wounded in a driveby assassination attempt while passing through St. Peter’s Square in an open car. The pope recovered, but conspiracy theorists have long speculated whether the pope was shot by a then-10-year-old Tupac Shakur or Notorious B.I.G, then 9.

On this day in 1637, Cardinal Richelieu of France invented the table knife – perhaps to discourage dinner guests picking their teeth with the points of their daggers, and/or to cut down on suppertime stabbings.
