It's upside-down Flag Day ... "grab 'em by the pole"
Birthdays: Harriet Beecher Stowe, author, “Uncle Tom's Condo”
Twisted History: June 14, 2025
On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag, bypassing a starker design that depicted two colonists blasting each other with muskets in a disagreement about the Second Amendment.
Today is Flag Day, traditionally celebrated by debating whether it’s OK for a Supreme Court justice to fly the American flag upside-down at his house.
On this day in 1954, President Eisenhower signed an order adding the words “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. The original pledge, penned in 1892, included no mention of God, religion, evangelical extremism or whether it’s OK for a Supreme Court justice to fly the American flag upside-down at his house.
On this day in 1943, the Supreme Court ruled that forcing schoolchildren to salute the flag is unconstitutional. The court also opined that fondling and kissing the flag, though not technically illegal, is federally frowned upon.
